This year marked the second and final year that the Barry Naimark Charity Skins Bonspiel has donated proceeds to the Pets and Friends charity. We are currently looking to nominate a new charity for the next two Skins Bonspiels. If you know of a smaller, Lower Mainland based charity that could benefit from this event, please let us know.
All nominations can be directed to email@example.com
With the bonspiel season winding down, this will likely be our last jam-packed edition of Competition Corner. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who submitted results and assisted in making the first season of Competition Corner a success.
February was another busy month with provincial playdowns, provincial, and national events. We would like to start with congratulating Team Ordog, Skip: Christopher Ordog, Third: Aaron Lindgren, Second: Greg Ohashi, and Lead: Logan Chinski on winning the 2015 Canadian Gay Curling Championship, held in Toronto the last weekend in February, adding another banner to the Ice Shed. Team Ordog went in knowing that the last three winners have been representatives of the VCC.
February also saw the Lower Mainland Playdowns for the BC Mixed Curling Championships. The VCC had five teams competing and members on a sixth curling out of the Richmond Curling Club. Team Gessner, Skip: Brian Gessner, Third: Danielle Callens, Second: Chris Chute and Lead: Jaime McLaren, along with Team Guignard, Skip: Jeff Guignard, Third: Elisha Yager, Second: Dylan Somerton and Lead: Lorelle Weiss, both made it to the semi-finals for a qualifying spot before their event came to an end. Other participants included Team Brower, Skip: Richard Brower, Third: Lindsay Hudyma, Second: Jan Bos and Lead: Carman Cheng, Team Forrest, Skip: Andrew Forrest, Third: Becky Campbell, Second: Dave Marchant and Lead: Allison DenToom, and Team Robertson, Skip: Scott Robertson, Third: Shelley Birston, Second: Kevin Mintenko and Lead: Krista Frazee.
Team Richter, Skip: Marilou Richter, Second: Deb Walker, Third: Brenda Garvey and Lead: Pam Cuthbert finished fourth at the BC Senior Women’s Provincials held at the Alberni Curling Club making it to the playoff round after a great round robin. Team Macdonald, Skip: Richard Brower, Third: Jan Bos, Second: Stan Walker and Lead: Larry Macdonald were also in Port Alberni competing in the BC Senior Men’s Provincials. Team Macdonald wanted to thank fellow VCC curler Stan Walker for stepping in at third, when the team had to make a last minute roster change. The team had a fun event and were just a few rocks away from qualifying for the playoffs.
Team Schneider, Skip: Stephen Schneider, Third: Jeff Guignard, Second: Shawn Eklund, and Lead: Brant Amos, spent February 4 – 8, 2015 at the Vernon Curling Club, host of the Canadian Direct Insurance BC Men’s Curling Championship. The team went 0-3 but gained valuable experience and was thankful for the opportunity.
Amongst all the provincial events and playdowns, there were also VCC members playing in club spiels. Team Gessner, consisting of VCC members Brian Gessner, Jaime McLaren and Chris Chute took home the A event at the Royal City Curling Club mixed spiel held February 13 – 15, 2015. Team Forrest was also at the event, along with Team Carpenter, Wade Carpenter, Daniel Jun and VCC Ice Tech, Cher Choi who lost in the B event qualifier.
Though not officially in February, at the very beginning of March the VCC Barry Naimark Charity Skins Bonspiel took place, which raised about $4000 for the Pets and Friends charity. Three of the Four winning teams represented the VCC. Results can be found here.
As always, we want to celebrate the activities of all our members, so if we have missed anyone, or there is an error, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you for a great 2014 / 2015 season.
This year's event was a great success, raising just over $4000 for Pets and Friends, a charity that brings animals to hospitals and care facilities to provide patients with furry friends.
